This large hand-forged twisted iron fibula is a replica from the antiquity and early medieval period. This beautiful ‘penannular’ brooch, or fibula, is twisted in both directions to create an intricate pattern and has elegantly detailed ends. This specific brooch is a replica after a historical example from the 1st century CE, and therefore best suited for the Roman or Germanic period, but its appearance would not be out of place in the Viking age either. These brooches were often used to close large garments, such as cloaks, but archaeological finds suggests that they were also used to fasten chainmail in the Roman period. The Roman twisted omega fibula measures 9 x 8 cm and the length of the needle is 11 cm.
