This oval shaped, medium iron brooch is based on archaeological finds from the Viking age and is nicely decorated with carvings. This is a ‘penannular’ – ‘pen’ for the pin, ‘annular’ simply means ring-shaped – style brooch, also called fibula, with curled ends. These brooches were used widely between the eight and eleventh century but were already in use during the Roman period. Their main use is to close garments, like cloaks. The forged oval shaped fibula has a diameter of ca. 6 cm and the length of the needle is 8 cm.
